Hello Everyone!
This week we will be discussing flipped classrooms, open educational resources and the new skills I learned on PowerPoint this week!
“The Flipped Classroom” is when the students are shown the information before class begins, and then once they get to class, their learning of the information is deepened through discussion and activities. This basically means that students teach themselves the information on their own, and then when they get to class, they learn more about it and can ask questions on what they do not understand. I think “flipped classrooms” have a good motive, to deepen the knowledge at a higher level than possible when teaching in class, but in reality do not play out how they are supposed too. This is because if students are supposed to teach themselves something before class, most of them will not. Instead, only the few who truly care about school will get to class already have learned the information, but they will have to sit in class while the teacher has to re-teach the lesson to all the students who did not bother to learn it. I think because of the different motivations of students, flipped classrooms do not work as well as we hope.
Open educational resources are resources that anyone can access and use. They are normally distributed online. The “open” part comes from the idea that others have permission to share them, edit them, or own them. The article about OER that I am reviewing is called “16 OER Sited Every Educator Should Know,” it lists sixteen OER that are beneficial in many different ways, and that anyone can access. The one I thought was most helpful was “College Open Textbooks,” which lists many textbooks in order of subject area, and they have all been peer reviewed. This is helpful to me now as a college student, because I found that I can go to different online textbooks for free, which could save many students lots of time and money, and give them an added resource. I acquired a lot of new skills working on the two PowerPoint assignments. I had never really used PowerPoint before. I learned how to add voice to a slideshow, how to make my own graphic art, how to add a slide and rename it and reorganize it to how I like it. My favorite thing I learned how to do was add animations to the slides, it makes it so much more interesting to watch! These skills are all super beneficial to make PowerPoint in my everyday life. For example, I will be able to as a teacher make better slideshows that my students can easily read and pay attention too. Additionally, I learned how I can make a slideshow interactive and so I could make games for my students to participate in in my classroom. PowerPoint is so useful to learn and I am happy I learned so many new skills. Below is a screenshot from each of my powerpoints!
